Google Gives Us Virtual Reality For Free!

Unlike the popular Second Life which cost $9.95 a month, like most things Google Lively will be completely free and only requires a plugin to get started. Lively's users will be able to sculpt an avatar that can be male, female or even a different species. An avatar can assume a new identity, change clothes or convey emotions with a few clicks of the mouse. You will also be able to create virtual rooms that you design yourself and visit your friends rooms, coffeehouses and even exotic islands! Google even gives you the ability to setup TV where you can watch Youtube videos in your room. A Google spokeswoman said that there isn't any currency in Lively, but that users will be able to add objects from Lively's catalog to their rooms free of charge. And users can't yet create their own items but should be able to down the road. This application already works on Facebook and Google is working to get it operational on MySpace. I can only imagine where it will go from here! Check out the video below for some screen shots...

Second Life is free,though.... I've never had to pay to use it. And so far Lively has been even slower loading for me than SL has been.

Lively isn't anything new though, virtual communities have been around since the early 90's (remember Onlive Traveler, cybertown, activeworlds, worlds.com, moove traveler, IMVU, etc etc)

And Second Life is free btw
